Sex and the City Revisited …..

Sex and the City may have ended about 15 years ago, but it remains one of the most beloved series in my era. After all, it was four ladies who proved women could be independent, successful, and enjoy themselves however they wished. While they set trends in society, there is also no forgetting some of their major fashion trends from the early 2000s. Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie bradshaw) was known for her love for shoes, like me. She had one of the most enviable closets on television. Certainly, the designer footwear of choice was Manolo Blahnik, and the $800-plus shoes soon became a sell-out on the New York streets. Before Sex and the City, not too sure that the thought of spending so much on a shoes was the norm . Even Big knew the way to Carrie’s heart was with a set of heels from her favorite designer, setting high expectations for many future husbands out there!

They were the great trendsetters, they wore mismatched patterns and prints and got away with it. Regardless of this trend being considered a major fashion faux-pas amongst most at the time, these New York residents were constantly changing the fashion game while on-screen and would wear mismatched ensembles over the course of the series. Like the other fashion trends worn on Sex and the City, Carrie’s love with her love for shoes showed no hiding Carrie’s love for bags. In almost every episode, Carrie was sure to rock a small handbag that would set fashionistas’ pulses racing. More often than not, Carrie was showing off a Fendi Baguette, which undoubtedly quickly became the It-bag of the time. There is no denying that the girls on Sex and the City were daring when it came to their outfit choices, but it worked all the time. Every piece of clothing or accessory they wore would become a hit, and the big flower was no different. This quirky touch to Carrie’s outfit was all part of the fashion icon’s style.

Their obsession for cupcakes. It is hard to imagine a time when cupcakes were not all the rage, but it was the Sex and the City girls that started society’s obsession with the tasty treats. After the unforgettable moment in Season 3 when Carrie meets Aidan Shaw for the first time, her and Miranda gossip over cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery in the West Village. Just like Tasti D-Lite, Magnolia Bakery quickly became the “It-cupcake” spot, and cupcakes became every PR’s number one go-to for any event.

Slip Dress

Walk into any women’s fashion store, and you are sure to find a slip dress hanging on a rail at some point on the shop floor. A staple which became popular in the ’90s is still one of the most beloved pieces of clothing in any girl’s wardrobe, and we have Carrie Bradshaw to thank for that. Just like she paved the way for high heel designer shoes and Fendi handbags, one of Carrie’s favorite dress styles was, of course, the simple and versatile slip dressclip_image009

Kitten Heels

Whether you like it or not, the kitten heel is one style that is not going out of fashion any time soon. Appealing to women of all ages, the kitten heel is the more practical heel for shoe lovers who want that extra lift but still enough comfort. With Carrie’s love for shoes undeniable, she was also a fan of the kitten heel and was often seen running around New York City in some of her favorite bedazzled kitten heels. Of course, she had multiple pairs in her massive shoe closet.

Curls

While Carrie Bradshaw certainly didn’t invent the curl, her blonde, curly mane was a massive hit during the late ’90s and into the 2000s. During this time, fans of the show were encouraged to ditch their straighteners to let their natural hair flow and become confident with their curls, the same way Carrie Bradshaw certainly was. Even today, the texture lives on. With many thanks to Miss Bradshaw, girls all around the world have embraced their gorgeous curly hair since the release of the show.

Apple Laptops

No one can forget Carrie Bradshaw speaking to herself at the beginning of most episodes, while she typed out her thoughts on her black PowerBook G3. In fact, the Mac computer became a main character on the show, because Carrie would discuss the topic of the episode in front of her computer first. Just as Carrie was loyal to most of her possessions, her loyalty to Mac computers was no different, and she upgraded her Mac as the series went on. Most super fans would have quickly followed suit!

Crop Tops

Just as Carrie was not shy about showing some of her intimate clothing, she was not shy about baring her belly in crop tops either. No matter the occasion or the choice of the bottom, the SATC girls were happy to bare all, and 20 years later, so are most girls. Whether it be on the runway, going shopping, out for dinner, or a night out in the city, girls everywhere are happy to rock the crop top, and not feel bad for doing so.

Tulle Skirts

Just recently at the Billboard Music Awards, Janet Jackson turned up to the red carpet in a tulle skirt, proving the fashion trend is still around in 2018. After all, no one can forget the opening credits of Sex and the City, which shows Carrie Bradshaw being splashed with water while wearing a pink tulle skirt. In fact, this item of clothing would have been seen every episode from the beginning thanks to the opening credits, and no one would deny Carrie Bradshaw’s fashion choices.

Floral Prints

While we may be highlighting the most popular trends overall from the show, this marks a momentous moment in fashion. The moment Carrie Bradshaw is seen wearing the perfectly fitted floral Dolce & Gabbana dress, floral print became a fashion phenomenon. While viewers’ jaws dropped worldwide when they caught sight of the fashionista in this dress, making this one of the most memorable moments in SATC history, this also marked the beginning of floral print. The print has since not gone out of style, and probably never will!

Vintage Fur

The tutu may have been the chosen clothing for the opening credits of the series, but another stand-out garment of Carrie’s was certainly the fur coat. From the very first episode to the last, the fur coat was a staple for the girls in New York City, and there was nothing it couldn’t be paired with. Even to this day, and amongst all the controversy, designers are continually trying to reinvent the classic in a cruelty-free, yet chic, way so every girl can get their hands on one.

Open-Toed Mules

What would this list be if there was not another mention of shoes that became famous because of Carrie Bradshaw? We’re speaking of the open-toed mules for this one, which can still be seen in every major fashion store! After all, if Carrie Bradshaw said they were OK, then we are taking her word for it. She did not spend around $40,000 on shoes over the years and have nearly no money to afford her apartment for nothing – it was all in the name of fashion, darling.

Off-The-Shoulder Dress

Looking at this picture below of Carrie Bradshaw wearing this off-the-shoulder dress, you would think photo was taken just last week. The staple dress is a must-have fashion piece in every girl’s wardrobe this summer and can be seen in most fashion stores throughout 2018. Available in a variety of lengths, patterns, and colors, the off-the-shoulder dress has become a popular choice for fashionistas and, once again, Carrie Bradshaw paved the way for this one non-fashionable item.

It is fun for any girl to feel pretty in pink, but if you think you got there first, then you need to rewind back to the days of Charlotte York. The Princess of the Upper East Side during the early 2000s, Charlotte was always elegantly dressed and liked to dress as feminine as she could. Cue the pink, and Charlotte got her hands on a Roland Mouret two-piece, rocked different shades of fuchsia and salmon, and even had bags to match!
